5 tips to ensure a successful photography session

You have taken the plunge and decided to hire a professional to capture the images you have always hoped for…… but what can you do to help ensure your photography session is successful?  I am here to give you 7 tips that you can do to help achieve your desired images.  Remember, these tips are geared towards photo sessions with children and not all may apply to other types of sessions.:)

1.  Talk with your photographer before hand about clothing choices.

– To help create timeless photographs, it is important to choose clothing that is also timeless.  Clothing that is distracting is just that….distracting.  Stay away from clothes that have TV characters and anything that your child is uncomfortable wearing.

2. Allow yourself plenty of time on the day of your session.

– No one wants to feel like they were rushed getting ready or getting out of the door on the day of your session.  Kids feed off of their parents, and if the parent is anxious, your kids will respond the same way.  Leave enough time, and be relaxed.

3.  Bring a snack.

– I cannot stress enough how important this one is.  Make sure to pack a small snack for your child.  Taking photos is a hard job for a child, and sometimes they simply need a snack/water break.

4.  Allow the photographer to interact with your child.

– It is our job as photographers to capture your children in the most organic way.  This does NOT happen if parents are standing behind/beside/in front of the photographer saying… “SAY CHEEEESE!”  Those days are over.  Let the photographer interact with your child and you will be oh so satisfied when you see the images of your sweet child making amazing connection with the camera.

5.  Help your child be in a good mood.

– Like stated before, if the parents are in a good mood, the kids will feed off of that.  If your child is not cooperating during their session, please don’t yell at your child, or do anything to make them react in an upset way.  It is completely natural for kids to be kids, and a good photographer will still be able to capture your child’s personality and innocence.

All in all, just have a great time.  And, remember, photos are forever.  Let your photographer help capture these special moments in your lives.  These images tell your story.  Such a wonderfully unique story.

Little Abraham was in my studio last week for his newborn photo session. He was sooo excited to meet his Mommy, Daddy, and big brother that he decided to come 2 months early. He weight just about 3lbs and spent some extra time in the hospital. He is doing excellent and was maybe my easiest session to date. He is so handsome and perfect! ***All images copyright Photos by Kelsey. Please tag and share, but do not copy, crop, or alter.
